Below are images of the shells that I observed.
As you can see on the top left side were my first few attempt drawings of a dried pomegranate, after that I only focused on various shells. Media I used on these tow pages was mostly pencil, however I did use some pen to highlight specific areas of some shells.
On the left side you can see I used watercolour to replicate the colours of one of the shells, I think this was successful and I will try this again. However the drawings on the right side were not as successful as I found that the shell I was drawing was hard to draw due to its rounded 3D shape, I mainly struggled with proportions and adding depth, however this can be improved later on.
For the two pages above I began drawing with more experimentations, as I began incorporating a larger variety of media (pen, hairspray, pencil, tea stain, charcoal) Using a larger amount of media helps to bring out more depth and definition to the drawings making them stand out better, also adding variety.
I also began drawing in a larger scale. As you may see in the first pages of my observational drawings, they were quite small. However it seemed that drawing larger scale creates much better results as it allows a better focus on details and clear mark making. I also started using more of charcoal, however I prefer using charcoal for the purpose of highlighting sections of drawings and not the whole drawing, as this media tends tu rub and smudge meaning lines and marks become more unclear.
I began adding other media to my background, in this instance pieces of book pages. I think they add subtle detail and colour to the background making the drawings appear less blank. I also started to mix more pen and pencil together, as it seems like the pencil allows to outline the shape of the shell in a subtle way, and then the pen brings out the whole drawing with more definition, in some areas I have sprayed hairspray over the pen, to add purple tones as they are similar to the colours of the shell but also create a contrast between the drawings. These 3 pages are the most successful so far as the consist both of detail and media combined well together.
I later on went back to drawing and painting more colour shells observations, mainly focusing on the pinker and softer colours of the shells. I personally don't believe these observational drawings turned out as well as my first water colour drawings shown previously, as the colours are less defined and slightly smudged in some, which makes the drawing look slightly dirty. However this could be a good thing, as I am trying to represent functionless shells, hence they would not look perfect or nice, and would be rather worn out, and not as vibrant as originally.
For this page I tried to focus on a particular close up section of the shell focusing mainly on the ridges it has. Although the main details are quite plain, I wanted to incorporate this drawing with some sort of background and add a bit of tone.
These observational drawings were the most successful in my opinion, mainly because their is a combination of various mediums such as pen, pencil, chalk, black paper, which creates depth and adds dimension to the drawings, they also appear bold and highlighted and more personalised to my theme, as the black paper allows to create this visual effect as if the shells are missing parts of themselves like they lack of function and purpose and this black paper represents that emptiness that is being attempted to be filled. I now know I will continue with this style of drawings and will try to incorporate them with my backgrounds later on to create collages.
Overall drawing observations of shells has been very helpful as it allowed me to narrow down the styles that appeal to me the most, and allowed to experiment with different mediums and mark making as well as think of effective compositions. I will continue working towards my final piece by experimenting further on inspired by artists and collaborate everything together for a more refined outcome.
